A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machinery which is quite similar to a forklift. It enables the driver to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These machines are mostly utilized in a warehouse environment. Usually they are utilized for transporting pallets and doing particular tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be raised to the required level which makes it very convenient for the operator. Like for example, if the materials required, are located on a shelf which the operator cannot reach, then entire platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, several companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts could be used to finish these particular jobs at some companies instead.
