Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by big industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures should always be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is important for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place must be an emergency eyewash post. The route to the post must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a battery and charging area, open fire are not allowed. Do not permit items like for example matches or lighters to be used when somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be correctly ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
